Kelingking Lift Construction Halted

On Nusa Penida, construction of a lift to the famous Kelingking Beach has been temporarily halted.

Launched in 2023 by a group of Chinese investors with support from central and local authorities, the 182-meter lift was intended to ease access to the beach, which currently requires about a 40-minute hike down a steep, at times hazardous, trail.

Former Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno backed the initiative, calling the lift a new regional attraction. Bali’s tourism department also stated the project had passed all required approvals.

As the main structure rose, however, the public protested that it obstructed the bay’s iconic panoramic view. Following widespread criticism, authorities suspended construction. Regional representatives now note the project was not fully cleared by all stakeholders, despite 2023 statements.

Work is currently paused, and the lift’s future remains uncertain.
