Indonesia to Remove Three Zeros from the Rupiah

Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance has announced plans to redenominate the rupiah — three zeros may be removed from the national currency. The initiative is aimed at increasing confidence in the currency and simplifying calculations.

Today, the smallest banknote in circulation is 1000 rupiah (about six US cents), while the largest is 100 000 rupiah, equivalent to around six US dollars.

Talks about redenomination are not new: the issue was last raised in 2013, but the bill was postponed at that time. Now the authorities are returning to the topic and preparing an updated version of the document in order to implement it by 2027.

Many see this reform as a logical step. After all, anyone who has used cash in Bali at least once remembers how, after exchanging currency, their wallet ends up stuffed with thick bundles of banknotes — and for a short time, you feel like a millionaire. It seems that soon this feeling will remain only in memories.
