Safest Places to Live in Bali: Earthquake and Tsunami Risk Ranking

π Where in Bali is safest from earthquakes and tsunamis?
Bali is located in a zone where two huge tectonic plates meet: the Indo-Australian and the Eurasian plates. This place is called a subduction zone. One plate slowly moves beneath the other. This is what causes earthquakes, and sometimes tsunamis.
When an earthquake happens, the ground beneath a building can jerk sharply. This is measured by ground acceleration.
For example: 0.4g means the building is pushed sideways with a force close to half its weight.
In southern Bali (Denpasar, Bukit, Kuta), official maps show up to 0.4g. That means a zone with high seismic activity.
Tsunamis in Bali are rare, but possible.
Average wave height: 2-4 meters, with a historical maximum of up to 10 meters (1992).
The main risk is for plots right by the sea and without elevation.
β
Bali area safety ranking (from most protected to most vulnerable):
1. Bukit (Uluwatu, Pecatu, Ungasan)
High elevation: 80-140 meters above sea level
Soil is hard limestone, like rock
Waves do not reach here
The ground shakes, but remains stable
2. Ubud and the center of the island
High up, deep inland in Bali
Far from the ocean β a tsunami will not reach there
The soil is softer, and sliding may occur after rains
3. Bedugul, Kintamani (mountains)
High up, far from the sea
Slopes, rains, and proximity to the volcano must be taken into account
4. Lovina (north)
Calmer than the south
Low elevation 10-30 m, and mixed soil conditions
5. Amed, Candidasa (east)
Plots are often close to the water
The soil is sandy and shakes easily
6. Sanur, Nusa Dua
Almost level with the ocean 2-10 m
Soils are soft, and waves may reach inland
7. Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta
1-5 meters above sea level
Right by the water, with no buffers
Loose soil amplifies tremors
