Construction of the lift at Kelingking suspended

Construction of the lift at the famous Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida has been temporarily suspended.

The project was launched in 2023 by a group of Chinese investors with support from central and local authorities. According to the original concept, the 182-meter lift was intended to make it easier for tourists to descend to the beach, a route that currently takes about 40 minutes on foot along a steep and at times dangerous trail.

The initiative was supported by former Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno, who said the lift would become a new attraction for the region. Representatives of Bali’s tourism department also stated that the project had received all the necessary approvals.

However, as the supporting structure was being erected, the public voiced objections: the construction began to block the famous panoramic view of the bay. After a wave of criticism, the authorities decided to halt construction. Regional representatives now clarify that the project had not been fully agreed upon by all parties, despite the statements made in 2023.

At the moment, work is suspended, and the future of the lift remains uncertain.
