Kelingking Beach Lift Construction Suspended
Construction of the lift at the famous Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida has been temporarily suspended.
The project was launched in 2023 by a group of Chinese investors with support from central and local authorities. Under the original concept, the 182-meter lift was designed to make access to the beach easier for tourists, as the descent currently takes around 40 minutes on foot along a steep and at times dangerous trail.
The initiative was backed by former Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno, who said the lift could become a new landmark for the area. Bali tourism department representatives also stated that the project had received all required approvals.
However, as the main structure began to rise, public opposition grew, with critics arguing that it was blocking the iconic panoramic view of the bay. Following the backlash, authorities decided to halt construction. Regional officials now say the project had not been fully agreed by all parties, despite the statements made in 2023.
For now, work remains on hold, and the future of the lift project is still uncertain.
