Interesting facts about Balinese culture. Part 1
1. Thursday is traditional clothing day
In Bali, there is a rule: on Thursdays, people wear traditional outfits.
Imagine walking down the street and almost everyone is in sarongs and beautiful shirts.
Men wear an udeng headpiece and cloth wrapped around the waist.
Women wear a lace kebaya blouse, a long sarong, and a sash.
They do this even in offices and banks. You look around and it feels like a celebration, but it is just Thursday.
2. Daily offerings
Every morning, Balinese people make small baskets from palm leaves.
They place flowers, rice, sometimes candy or a cigarette inside, and always incense.
These baskets are called canang sari.
You see them everywhere: on a shop doorstep, on a motorbike, at the entrance to an office.
The meaning is to say “thank you” to the gods and appease the spirits.
The main rule for tourists: do not step on them, especially while the incense is still burning.
3. An altar in every home
In Bali, almost every home has its own small temple.
It is not just a corner, but a whole part of the courtyard with small towers and statues.
Offerings are brought there every day, and incense is lit.
People pray there for the family and call on their ancestors to help.
For Balinese people, this is the heart of the home. Without such a temple, a family is not considered complete.
